Roofing Solutions Against Hurricanes

Roofs are the major places which fail first due to hurricanes. For places which are extremely prone to hurricanes, the houses should be constructed in such a manner which enables them to withstand the wind force and pressure, specially the roofs and hurricane winds should not cause any trouble to it. The roofing materials are evaluated and rated by the United Laboratories under the following categories to withstand wind speeds (ClassD-90mph, ClassF-110mph, ClassG-120mph, ClassH-150mph).

Roofing materials, which are both fire and wind resistant have been developed over the years and they have proven to with stand the winds by the roofs and hurricanes are dealt with.

Some of the materials which have been developed to specifically to tackle high wind speeds during hurricanes are as follows:

Fibreglass Shingles: They are made up of man made fibreglass mat which is dipped into asphalt and have mineral granules embedded into them. They are known to be protective against heavy winds as well as fire resistant. They have a heat activated adhesive strip which makes them water tight and does not allow water to enter through your roofs. Wind speed resistance warranty of 90 to 120 mph has been achieved with the use of such shingles. Their life is about 10-30 years and they come with a warranty of 10 years against algae growth.

Concrete and clay tiles: concrete has been used for centuries in making roofs of houses due to its durability and easy maintenance. Concrete tiles have been known to resist winds of up to 125 mph and come with a warranty of more than 50 years. They have a reflective property for sun, and keep your insulation problems at bay. Concrete tiles come in a multitude of colours and designs and can simulate wooden as well as clay tiles shapes and designs. The tiles are laid down with the help of a foam adhesive which makes a tight bond in the roofing which makes it wind and water resistant.

Metal Tiles: Metal tiles have been fabricated over the years to tackle several problems in roofing. Firstly, it is the light weight of these metal tiles which make them suitable for use. The strength of these tiles is tremendous and has proven to withstand winds above 125 mph. They are the most durable of the three and they also require the minimum maintenance. They can be made up of a wide range of metals like aluminium, copper, zinc, stainless steel etc. They also have a metal coating of various metal compounds and alloys which make them more durable and further increases their life and withstanding capacity.
